I introduced the class to Libby, a stuffed frog with a little personality. I explained to the class that Libby would be going home with each one of them every weekend and they would share their weekend adventures with her. Libby had a suitcase, a travel bag, a change of clothes, and her journal. I gave the students examples of journal entries (created by my own nine year old son). Each student would write an entry in her journal. The only guidelines they had were to write no less than five sentences for the journal entry. I also explained that I was not going to grade the activity, I wanted the students to be completely comfortable using their imagination without worrying about ‘getting a good grade’. As the journal entries began to develop, Libby came alive. Each Monday a student brought her back and shared a brand new adventure with the class. Libby became a true member of our class and the students looked forward to their weekend with her. On their own, the students took Libby on a different adventure each weekend. I was amazed at the work that came back each Monday. Each time someone read Libby’s Journal I saw my students glow with pride. My students brought Libby to life. Libby is a unique character that will live in my heart forever. I fell in love with Libby and I hope you will too. About the Author
My name is Sharon Blake. I am a third grade teacher at Bedford Elementary School in the beautiful mountains of Virginia. At the beginning of the school year I introduced my class to Libby, a stuffed frog with a little personality. I explained to the class that Libby would be going home with each one of them every weekend and they would share their weekend adventures with her. Each student would write an entry in her journal. As the journal entries began to develop, Libby came alive. Each Monday a student brought her back and shared a brand new adventure with the class.
