I leave the city on my yearly sabbatical with great enthusiasm, relinquishing my professional identity and professional struggles, if only temporarily, to my irresolute comrades. The mental health in Miami will have to lay in their very capable hands for the next four months..
As we begin the drive to our home in the Colorado Mountains, my life and my perspective on what really matters, undergoes its annual transformation. The natural world, instead of my bank account, becomes my yardstick. I release the one-sided relationships required to practice my healing arts in the City. On the Mountain, I cherish the giving and sharing with other people, and acknowledge this as the basis for my strength and inspiration. My husband is once again my hero. My family is clearly and simply my highest priority. Our home is a sanctuary, which we readily share.
The Mountain becomes my playground and my mentor. The animals are playmates. Occasionally they bring me to the edge of my fears, and then lead me home again. The altitude, rocks and inclines are a constant challenge to my maturing body. The weather too is my teacher. Its constant, but intense variations remind me that all nature has its own guiding forces and its own wisdom. Weather teaches that change is the only phenomenon we can count on. This time in my life is the study of process beyond attachment.
On the Mountain I learn, and relearn the art of the gentle spirit, the beauty of a moment-to-moment awareness, and the truly sacred nature of patience and humility. And to my constant delight, I become aware that as my life becomes quieter and gentler, so do I.

About the Author
Pamela Long-Dugan Barthelem is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice with twenty-five years of experience. She is married and the natural, adoptive, or stepparent to nine young adults. Her hobbies include playing tennis, cooking, reading, and writing. She divides her time between Miami, Florida, and Fairplay, Colorado.
