The Gin is the kind of place where hard men go to drink, gamble, fight and chase women. The dancers dance topless and poorly on a small stage in the corner. One of them frequently escorts one or other of the male patrons into a set of back rooms for a couple minutes of private time. Someone is sure to make a mess by getting sick or starting a fight. There’s a drain in the bare cement floor so it’s easy to clean up. The police are there at least a couple times a month to settle things down between the customers. It’s within easy walking distance of Sky’s apartment and he likes the gritty edge to the characters who are regulars. There’s an old pool table, darts and shuffleboard in the back, and there’s always someone willing to lay down a bet. If he does get a little too drunk, Sky can easily walk home. “You’re going to like this place. It’s gritty and tough,” Sky tells Shylak as they approach the door.

Sky Lamborsky and Michael “Fingers” Cunningham feel it’s time to move forward in life and shed the transgressions of their youth. That means disconnecting them-selves from the Gin, a hole in-the-wall dive bar in Arizona that is a trap for criminals, the kind of place where hard men go to drink, gamble, fight and chase women. The two have a lot in-vested in the place, but even more to lose if the authorities ever catch up with them.
But leaving the Gin and its under-the-table activities is not going to be easy. The place is underwritten by Norwood Mira who, on the surface, is a high-profile politico. But underneath, he’s a gangster who uses his political connections to further himself in illegal activities. Mira is not a man to cross.
In order to begin their new lives, Sky and Fingers must find a way to get out from underneath Mira’s control without going to jail—or losing their lives.

WILLIAM L. KOSTOW is retired after working twenty-five years as a financial executive. He enjoys being outdoors and riding his motorcycle. Kostow lives in Gilbert, Arizona. This is his debut novel.
