After murdering DeMoss in cold blood, I sat back and reviewed my actions. I needed answers to some fairly important questions.
Why did I go back and hunt for DeMoss? My attack on him seemed totally out of character for me. I’d like to think it was just a momentary lapse in judgment, but I just don’t know. Maybe I have always been hardwired for murder, but the urge didn’t surface until some innocent woman’s life was in danger. I sat in the dark and waited for the cops to come and arrest me, and I spent a lot of time heaving up my guts in the “porcelain God.” In the evening of the second day, when I was sure the cops weren’t going to beat my door down, I sat at the dining table and took my journal out. I wanted to find out what made me react the way I did and how I felt about killing another human being.
Was it unabashed joy at putting an end to DeMoss’ pathetic life?

He grew up, served in the military, worked at various jobs, paid his taxes, and bowled with his buddies. But all that changed one dark night in November of 1984 when he ran into Albert DeMoss. Then McCallister’s descent into the dark of humanity began.
Smythe narrates a heart-wrenching tale of violence and cruelty, a story of one man’s journey to becoming a serial killer—a man who murdered more than forty people.
About the Author
David Burford has worked as a correctional officer for the Colorado Department of Corrections for the past several years, gaining an intimate knowledge of the darker side of humanity. He and his wife, Ann, live in Southern Colorado. This is his debut novel.
