"One of the wisest things I heard from more than one teenager in my years as a counselor was, "I have watched my parents, so I know how not to be one." "The grandfather was quite frustrated, I could tell: 'His problem is not ability---he has plenty of that, and he comes from a good, stable home. His problem is his rotten attutude.' The principal of the school told a set of parents, 'He has such a poor attitude that he won't even try to stay out of trouble or do what the teachers asks of him.' Attitude: It can either be a severe handicap to reaching success in any endeavor or it can be the reason even a person with nominal abilities reaches heights he ordinarily couldn't reach." "One way to combat over-the-counter drug addiction is to do as many parents have done: become educated and knowledgeable about the dangers of these drugs. Don't let your lack of awareness become a problem for your child." "A lot of the problem in many homes has to do with a struggle for power---and too often the parent is losing, which means everyone loses. He may try to manipulate you by saying: 'You never let me do anything!' or 'You don't trust me!' or 'You don't love me or you would let me. . . ' or he may curse or whine and complain and use threatening body language. If you allow him to bully you in this way, he is in control of the situation and that will lead to a devastating end." "Does your child dread being at home during the Holidays or the summer? Is he like the girl who said, 'We never know what it is going to be like at my house. He could be drunk or sober, raving or asleep, sarcastic or complimentary. We dread going home every day.'" "Are you loving your children to death? Do you give in when they beg? Are you allowing them too much freedom after school and at night without adult supervision, thus letting them make decisions that could jeopardize their safety?" "Even well-behaved kids from good families can become unruly when they are with a large group of other teens and young adults. Psychologists know that there is a fine line between a large crowd and a 'mob' when it comes to impulsive behavior."

About the Book
The author has written parenting columns for over 16 years for a local newspaper in the fastest growing county in the South. She has also written for and hosted a parenting radio show. Parents and grandparents have requested a book of her columns for years. Now, rather than cutting them out and putting them on the refrigerator, you can carry it with you. Since she has written a weekly column for 16 years, more books will follow.
About the Author
Jan has written a parenting column for over 16 years for a local newpaper in the fastest growing county in the South. She has also written for and hosted a parenting radio for three years. Parents and grandparents have requested a book of her columns every where she goes, and since her retirement as a high school counselor and English teacher, she has finally had time to put over 100 of her columns into this book. Now, rather than cutting them out and putting them on the refrigerator or sending them to your children or other parents, you can carry it with you or buy this volume for those who are still parenting (and we are all still parenting if we ever had children). Jan's expertise comes from years of being in the classroom with approximately 150 students per day. Since literature lends itself to discussion and often discussion leads to other issues, she has dealt with various areas of many lives that she has used in her columns. She does extensive research to validate her premises. In addition, during her more than 24 years as a counselor, she has helped parents deal with issues in academics, in marriage/family problems, in addictions, in eating disorders, in rebellious teens, and so many more. She lives with her husband near the tiny town of Walls, Mississippi, with two dogs and many flower gardens. Her one son has eight children including two sets of twins. As she says in her dedication, he has given her "fodder" for many of the columns. Since Jan has written the column for so many years and accumulated extensive material, more books will follow this one.
