The pulmonologist called me at home later that day. I had heard wonderful things about him from my mother-in-law, so I was expecting to hear good things, but he was gruff and abrupt with me right from the start. I had written a few things down, like questions I could ask him so I would be concise, but he wasn't budging. He made it clear that there was nothing he could offer me. He said it was rare for pulmonary hypertension to result from an obstructed nose, but that wasn't my observation. What did come through from our conversation was that he had begun to prepare me for care that would be more about the people around me who did not know the truth than it would be about me. All I knew was that I was a 38-year-old mother of two preschoolers, and I was not ready to wave my world good-bye.

About the Author
I’ve worked in the health care profession for 25 years, the last 10 years as a nurse anesthetist. I have a bachelor of science in nursing and a masters degree in nurse anesthesia. I’ve had years of working and training with the airway, the very crux of the disease I talk about in this story. With all my work experience, nothing would prepare me for the day that I would uncover the web of deceit and trauma within my own medical history and that of my family’s. And once that revelation came, I would look at the situation with enlightened eyes–a way of looking at the disease that only I could see.
