Chapter 1 I was running for what seemed like forever, running away from the people who called that place an orphanage. I wasn’t going to stop this time. I wasn’t going to turn myself back in again. I was really done with that place. I heard the chants of my fellow orphans yelling behind me. “Keep running!” “Don’t look back!” “You deserve to be free!” Then I heard the screaming from the people who were coming after me. “Where are you gonna go?” “Get back here you worthless rat!” “Zoey get back here now!” But I wasn’t stopping. This was the third time I had run away. The first time I had gotten caught by the police. The second time I came back because I didn’t have a place to turn to. But this time I wasn’t going back. I had been beaten, hurt and raped too much to stay in that place. I ran into a park and hid beneath big bushes. I heard the steps in front of me getting closer so I put my hand over my mouth to stop my heavy breathing. “Zoey Where are you?” It felt funny to hear my middle name coming from these people. I was sent here when I was about three years old. My mother couldn’t take care of me so she left me there. She said she would come back for me but that was fourteen years ago and I knew my life wouldn’t be the same. The name I was truly given was Roel Zoey Somers. But the orphanage wanted to change it. “Come out come out where ever you are,” said the other owner of the orphanage. “Jack,” said the other guy. I didn’t really get to know their names so I didn’t know who was who. “It’s getting too dark and a storm is coming. We’ll never be able to find a dirty girl in the rain. Maybe we should look for her in the morning.” Jack was quiet for what seemed like forever and I thought I was caught. “Fine but we start in the park,” he said and walked out of the park. I sat for a while waiting for the right time to check and see if someone found me. I looked up and noticed I was alone. I walked to the other end of the park and found a place to lie down under a tree. Just my luck it started to rain and it was hard and cold. I went into my backpack and got out my blanket and set it down where I laid. I was just about sleep when I felt someone put a jacket over me and pick me up. I unwillingly put my head on their shoulder while they started walking. I didn’t know who it was but they were incredibly warm and cozy. I knew I want in the arms of someone like Jack. I was sleep when I was put in the car but I felt content and safe with it all.

About the Author
Lanaya A. Pickett is from Hartford, Connecticut. She attends college at Sanford Brown College as a Fashion Design major. Growing up, Lanaya has always had a big imagination. In middle school while she was attending Metropolitan Learning Center in Bloomfield, Ct she became addicted to writing and designing. She took up art classes in high school such as Pre A.P. Art and A.P. Art. Lanaya then decided that she wanted to take her art to the next level with illustration and design. Around her high school junior year, Lanaya began to read a lot more science fiction novels and wanted to create a sci-fi world of her own. So she began to write. Though her first writings were fan fictions of her favorite novels she finished her first original story, Walking with Angels in 2009.
