After inhaling, she rested her head on the back of the leather chair and blew smoke rings into the upper reaches of the musty room. "So you ride the train to Bower shadowed by two bodyguards. How are you going to know this man when you see him?" I was ready. "I'll write him before I go, describing my looks, telling him what train I'll be on and that I will have two--male companions, though I do like your term." She tried to smile and blow smoke at the same time. "Go on." "I'll ask him how we'll recognize him, and tell him what time our train arrives. Searching her eyes for any softness or hint of intent, I found none, but I continued. "I'll have his letter in my hand before I buy my ticket."

About the Author
Pat Laster’s credits include Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture, Arkansas Biography, and Calliope: A Writer’s Workshop by Mail. She trained at Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum’s writers’ retreats and with residencies at the Writer’s Colony at Dairy Hollow. She lives in Benton, Arkansas, with her adult grandson, whom she raised.
