About the Book

Sy Hakim is an American Artist and Poet who has lived much of his life in Italy. This accounts for the many classical allusions one find in his works, both art and poetry. In addition to publication in various magazines and journals, he has published collections of poems (From the Cave-2007) and two plays. His first collection of poems was published in 1970, the same year of his first one person art show in Italy. He exhibits oils, woodblock prints and relief sculptures.

As an exhibiting artist, his works have been shown and collected in Europe, Asia and the United States. Currently he is most active/exhibiting with the American Color Print Society, and The Plastic Club.

Currently living with his wife, Odetta, in Philadelphia, PA. he has expanded his travels across America and his deepened experiences and awareness. Both poems and the art works are thematic with a strong relationship between the works. There is a shared pictorial approach: strong bold colors paralleling bold rhythmic explorations: “Sy Hakim is a humanist, interested in…a diverse civility and the ethic search into the story of myriad civilizations and religions…he fulfills the obligations of his subject and forms…a validity combined to sustain his expressionistic (humanistic and poetic) concept…” [S. His artistic-poetic production, the work, the essence, hopefully reveals in its variation of themes, and symbolic- expressionistic quality, a life reverence: the ambiguity of life and the imminence of time.

About the Author

I have been a publishing poet since the 1970s. I Have published over 5 books,am a listed poet: have been listed in Who is Who, International Poets and Writers,Small Pres Record of Books, etc. My poems have been published in many small magazines, have won prizes, etc. Many of my poems are written in conjunction with my art, both paintings and prints. Most recently , April 2010, the poem 'Beyond Color" was read at the opening of an art exhibition of The American Color Print Society. At the time I was in Italy where i maintain a studio. After earning my M.A. [New York Univewrsity] I have lived in Europe, mainly Italy from 1960 to 1993 , where where my art was internationaly exhibited. Upon retiring from the Dept. of Defense Overseas School System my wife Odetta and I came to live in Philadelphia, where I have a studio. Odetta and I still live part of the year in Italy, and while in the United States travel. we have visited many National Parks, etc. Our travels are the source of many art/poetry works.
