She leaped from her bed, instinctively shoving her nightgown down to fall about her feet and grabbing in the darkness for the wrapper that Martine had been kind enough to give her. Hooking it hastily around her shoulders, she threw her arms through the sleeves, bursting through the kitchen door.
With the dim light in the common room, she paused just a second, remembering her promise to stay out of sight and she was relieved that after a hasty glance round the room no one seemed to be about. She flew past the gaming tables and grasped the banister, taking the stairs two at a time in her bare feet. She raced on blindly, her heavy braid flapping down her back.
She would have been horrified to know that her mad dash had not gone unnoticed. One dark stranger, sitting alone in the shadows, seemingly unaffected by the furor upstairs, took note of the girl with the thick mass of auburn hair flying behind her as she ran across the floor toward the scene of the commotion. His eyes narrowed as he stared silently at the place where she had been.
