Q: Are you saying that the states should not be answering to the federal government in most areas? TJ: Yes indeed I am saying exactly that. When we wrote the constitution we wanted a federal government that was limited in power. The further away any government is from its constituents, the less they will understand the unique problems of each state. They become less accountable, less responsible and hungrier for more power. I wrote, “The true theory of our Constitution is surely the wisest and best, that the States are independent as to everything themselves, and united as to everything respecting foreign affairs. Let the General Government be reduced to foreign concerns only, and let our affairs be disentangled from those of all other nations, except as to commerce, which the merchants manage better, the more they are left free to manage for themselves, and our general Government may be reduced to a very simple organization, and a very inexpensive one; a few plain duties to be performed by a few servants.” How could anyone say the needs for the people of Alabama are the same as those who live in Maryland or Hawaii? To say that abortion must be allowed across this nation when clearly there are states and communities that would never tolerate abortion. Does the will of the federal government trump that of a community? If it does, we are certainly headed for tyranny. The states and communities must be allowed to choose their own destiny as long as it does not break natural law or federal law. Federal law should deal only with natural law for the individuals and then deal with commerce, foreign affairs, disputes between the states etc. The federal government should be there to ensure that individual states do not pass laws that are unconstitutional or reduce or eliminate individual freedom. The following quote from me sums up my feelings, “I am for a government rigorously frugal and simple. Were we directed from Washington when to sow, when to reap, we should soon want bread.”
