John gathers his belongings and horse gear and heads to South Carolina. He finds that the oxcart trails made during the war from the Northern states to North Carolina make a much safer journey, He reflects back on the teams of oxen which pulled huge cannon artillery and other warfare supplies by both the Colonist and the British to fight the war and feed the troops.
Oh, I am so glad the war is over. He thinks as his horse trots southward on a sunny day in November of 1783.
“Well, what a surprise!” Elizabeth shouts as John walks in the door.
The happily married couple enjoy this time of peace in the new country and dream of the future. They discuss Elizabeth’s school teaching position. John asks, “Are the children in your school learning anything?”
“Yes John, however, some learn more than others.” Answers Elizabeth.
“Why is that so?”
“You know, some listen and some are just daydreaming.”
“I guess it’s your job to get them all to listen so that they learn.”
“John, you do know I try to achieve that as my goal.”
“Good girl, I’m proud of you my dear!”
“Thanks John! Say, are you ready to settle down into the local political world here at home?”
“I am, however, as a new country, much has to be done to organize the states into a great functioning nation. Maybe I’ll be needed at our new Capitol city.”
“You know I’m ready for you to stay at home with me, but I understand.”
“One of these days we need to start a family. That’s when I’ll be here all the time.”
Elizabeth suggests, “Then, let’s start a family right now!”
“That sounds wonderful” John said as he anxiously hugs Elizabeth and engages her in a long smothering kiss, leading her to their bedroom.

About the Author
Julius Rainwater comes from a Southern family of 10. His service in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II makes him well qualified to write about wars in Kiss Me Soldier Boy. He resides in Conyers Georgia with his wife, Gloria Welch Rainwater.
