The only time they ever spoke freely was with each other, usually at parties after heavy drinking. This book is based on my eavesdropping of those parties as a six-year-old. Granted, snippets of drunken bragging overheard through walls by a child 60 years ago may not be a solid foundation for an historical novel but they have been a great backdrop for a World War II piece of fiction that correlates with history. Perhaps, not one word of these stories is true. Perhaps there is much truth. I cannot say. I have used my father as the protagonist although he may not have been involved at all. All I know of his wartime career is that he was in the CIC and his service record is blank from 1942 to 1946. He rose from private to major in those years with no explanation. No medals or ribbons indicate wartime assignments yet I have pictures of him during that time in desert and European settings, often in civilian clothes. To his last day, he kept his secrets, as did his fellow Spooks. This is, therefore, a story of what might have been. These are the tales my father never told me.

This book is inspired by whispered stories my father and his Counter Intelligence Corps buddies told each other. In the end, they took their secrets to the grave and I don’t pretend this is an accurate account of WW II espionage but it’s a great story that covers many forgotten aspects of the war. The intrigue of North Africa, the southern D-Day invasion of France, raids on concentration camps, the recovery of stolen Jewish gold and the destruction of the Nazi’s last-ditch terrorist squads: these are the tales my father never told me.
About the Author
JIM MILLERnow lives in the rolling hills of Kentucky where he continues to research the little known CIC organization that operated throughout World War II. Jim retired from the Air Force after serving as Director of Operations for the Presidential Airlift unit at Andrews Air Force Base. In that capacity, he met kings, presidents, and great men of every stripe but none earned his respect more than the silent heroes of the CIC. He hopes this book will reveal what it was like for them in the dark days when honor and mission trumped survival.
