About the Book

Return to Calvary is a collection of short stories and poems my grandmother hand wrote many years ago prior to her death in 1981. The stories tell of her life and people who made an impact on her while growing up in the early 1900s in a little town on the eastern shore, Crisfield, Maryland. Crisfield holds a special place in my heart and always will.

What our family affectionately refers to as “Calvary” was actually our Aunt Sallie’s home place and in our hearts, it always will be. A place where to this day, Aunt Sallie resides in our family’s gravesite. Return to Calvary has been created to share how different and wonderful growing up in the 1900s in Crisfield really was. There is no doubt that it will be treasured by all who read it.

About the Author

Effie Katharine Dix Ford was born January 26, 1903, in Crisfield, Maryland. She spent many happy years in Crisfield especially the time she spent at Aunt Sallie’s home in Calvary. She married John Otis Ford, also from Crisfield, and they had eleven children. Effie loved to read and write stories for her children and grandchildren. She always hoped her stories would one day be published for all to enjoy. Effie passed away in 1981 without this dream being realized. I believe today she is watching from above and would be very pleased. Linda Susan Smith Tuck is the granddaughter of Effie Ford. Linda has recorded the family’s history since in the early 1980s and is responsible for the publication of her grandmother’s stories. Linda returns to Calvary every couple of years to visit family members who will always be there. Calvary is where my grandmother grew up. It’s hard to explain but it’s as if it beckons me…to return from time to time..
