How to Talk With Women Don Ho said, “To me, a ‘Hawaiian’ is anyone local. Neighbors were Hawaiian in our eyes. A gracious Chinese family across the street brought us kulolo on Christmas. My Japanese friends helped me rake the yard. Mother paid them maybe 50 cents an hour. One of those kids is now a doctor.” Don became an Air Force pilot. During the end of the Korean War he was relocated to Hickam Air Force Base and spent free time helping at Honey’s. He resigned from the Air Force to assist his ailing mother and became manager, bartender, and dishwasher. Honey was the drawing attraction. With her out, they were lucky to take in $25 a day. “Why don’t you put your electric organ behind the bar?” Honey suggested to Don. “People like music. That might bring in some customers.” A bartender who sang at an organ was something new. Initially Don didn’t want to move from behind the bar where he felt comfortable and safe. You may be surprised to learn that he was shy. Kui Lee talked him out of being that way. Don’s inherent sense of timing and witty repartee, and his nimble mixing of volunteer talent with his own, produced a new kind of entertainment.

Arthur Rath III, Hawaii born and raised, is the grandson of James Arthur Rath, founder of Palama Settlement, and 125th descendent of the Lyman Hawaiian Missionary family (Lyman Museum, Hilo, Hawaii). A member of the Kamehameha Schools’ Hall of Fame, Rath has authored several books, was prominent in the U.S. public relations and consumer affairs fields for 40 years, and taught at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communications for 25 years. He is writing imaginative books entitled Being Menehune.
