They ran at a steady pace, but slower than Auty was accustomed. As they moved along the Beacon Street side of the Common, both avoided all references to what was on their minds the previous night.
After close to an hour Auty asked, "Do you want to go for another lap?"
"Sure," she answered unconvincingly, her heavy breathing showing vapor when she exhaled into the cold morning air.
They found themselves having to weave in and out among the throngs of office workers heading to their jobs, and finally as they approached the kiosk at the Park Street entrance to the subway, Rosie grabbed Auty by the arm to slow him down. "This is crazy," she said breathing even heavier now. "Let's call it a day." She came to an abrupt stop and bent over, putting her hands on her thighs. Auty stood next to her with his hand on her back while she caught her breath.
Suddenly pop, pop, pop - three gunshots rang out - bullets ricocheting off a vendor's pushcart with a twang, twang, twang. A woman walking just behind Rosie and Auty screamed, dropping her briefcase. "Somebody's shooting at us," she shouted, rushing toward the subway entrance seeking cover. Nearby, people froze in their tracks, unsure of what was happening. Others dropped to the ground, while some kept walking, oblivious to the event that was unfolding. As a second volley of three shots echoed in the chrisp fall air, Auty instinctively pushed Rosie to the pavement and covered her with his own body.
Rosie's voice was panicky, and muffled by Auty's forearm covering her face. "What's happening, Auty?"
"That woman was right, Rosie, someone is shooting at us!"
