Intimacy With God

Is the “divinization” of Jesus a symbol for all mankind? Is the “oneness” with God the final aim of humankind, and of the whole universe? That is the view of Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:28. Through the Incarnation God showed his purpose of being like a man, in order that we may see him as he wants to be seen. We might see that the Councils of the Church directed the faithful in a direction similar to the pagan mentality—although in a much higher and greater degree—of making creatures, as sculpted stones, trees or heavenly bodies, gods; in this case making the man, Jesus, God. But, was that God’s intention with the Incarnation? Or rather, was the Incarnation a sign that God wanted to ‘humanize’ himself, in Jesus? That he wanted to be close to us, and similar to us? And, would that show that the ‘divinization’ of the man, Jesus, would be the symbol, and the last, common goal of every human being? Our culture has such a dualistic and polarizing mentality God-man or God-world, that it makes it very difficult to see the holistic aspect in creation. We may wonder also what does that presence and union of the Divinity with humanity and in humanity mean? It should be clear that in any manifestation of that union Divine-human, of a God “humanized,” God is not with us and within us to change the laws of nature according to our caprices or fickleness, but to help our weak nature, and to give us light and strength, that we may live in peace, in a constant dependence and trust in him. This is the “Jesus’ Way.” And in any view we might have of the world—secular, religious, or scientific,—the last end of the universe will be its consummation or annihilation, and the only one that will subsist will be the same one which was present even at the beginning of the world, God, and only God. This is the view of 1 Corinthians 15:28: “That God may be all in all.”
