Back in Miami after the wonderful trip to Europe, I took stock of my situation, and, while not completely impecunious, my “stash of cash” was dwindling at an alarming rate. I moved into one side of my two bedroom duplex … allowing decent and inexpensive accommodations. While comfortable, I had this strange urge (strange for me) … it was time to get a … hold your breath … JOB! There, I said the J word! The money was obviously important, but feeling useless day after day was also a powerful incentive.
When visiting Miami while living in Jamaica, I used to be invited to house parties with some of the Coral Gables Sears store personnel, including the assistant to the personnel manager, Anita Higgley. Since I had worked a few months in the men’s department selling shirts over the holidays during my senior year at the U, I had considered a proposal from the then-personnel manager to join the Sears’s Management Trainee Program, offered to college graduates and selected department managers. I did appreciate the offer, but in the final analysis, the excitement, perceived glamour, exotic locations, and invested employment with Pan Am caused me to decline and proceed with the airline job as planned.

Island Fever chronicles a lifetime of adventure from a casual South Florida of the early 1930s to a Bahamian Island retirement almost eighty years later, with exciting and amusing stops along the way. Charlie Pfluger describes his life journey, including his stint in the US Air Force in the Far East and North Africa during the Korean War. After his tour of duty, he assumed station manager duties for Pan American Airways in the Caribbean and South America, moved on to hotel management in the Bahamian Out Islands, and had other assorted misadventures, professional and otherwise.
His has been an incredible life. Sometimes it was fun; sometimes it was disappointing—but all in all, it was an amazing ride!
About the Author
Charles Philip Pflueger was born in Miami, Florida, in 1931 and graduated with a BBA from the University of Miami in 1958.
