About the Book

This book is about a retired Baptist minister who had “A Special Calling” in more than one way. The Reverend Lud Flanigan is a unique individual. The reader will learn much about the Reverend Lud Flanigan and all of it is…good! They will learn that his brilliance behind the pulpit is exceeded only by his superb memory. He is an ordained minister who began to preach the word of God at an early age and continued to serve as a pastor of a church until his late eighties. One of his favorite messages is found in the book of Joel where the prophet conveys the Lord’s call to the people to repent, and his promise of restoration and blessing for his people. Noteworthy is the promise that God will send his spirit upon all the people, men and women, young and old alike.

Reverend Flanigan is also known for his superb memory. In accordance with scientific measure, Reverend Flanigan possesses a photographic memory. Upon conversing with him it can be easily be determined that he is able to retain and recall in precise detail events involving people and other things that occurred over 60 years ago. In most instances, if the event was of any significant and it occurred in Mansfield or any place within DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, he would know and could tell you about it.

Another amazing unique characteristic about Reverend Flanigan is the fact that he celebrated his 90th birthday on November 28, 2009. During the celebration at the church where he served as pastor for 48 years, he recalled the specific role of each of the speakers on the program. To this day, Reverend Flanigan continues to maintain three vegetable gardens, hunt during the open season and drives his car and truck to any location within the state.

The book also profiles a history of the place where Reverend Flanigan was born, grew up, attended school and made a living. The histories of the city of Mansfield, DeSoto Parish and the DeSoto Parish School System for African-Americans are presented in order for the reader to perceive beyond an envision the kinds of people and types of environment Reverend Flanigan came from. It also illustrated how the chemistry among the people inspired greatness and a yarning to succeed in extracurricular activities and life.

He is a retired VA Healthcare System Director where he completed more than 33 years of leadership service. Clay is the author of three other books.
