I question God all the time, even though I know I'm not supposed to and ask him why he's made my life so hard. But in reality I've made so many mistakes and bad decisions in my life, but why? Because of something that started to happen to me when I was five years old and I can't get over it. I know I was about five because when my mother would take my older sister to school he would put me in their bed and molest me while she was gone. How do you get over the fact that the two people, your parents who are supposed to protect you and take care of you are the two people who betrayed you? My father sexually abused me from the age of five until I was in the fifth grade and my mother caught him. She saw him with her own two eyes and still took him back when I was in the seventh grade.I I'll never forget that day she actually caught him. I think she was suspicious for a while but didn't want to believe it or face it. He sent her to the store but she really didn't go and came back and caught him. They started to fight and my mother kept screaming at him "why"? My grandmother came to the apartment that day and was at the front door and heard them. She broke the window and climbed in but my father jumped out the kitchen window and ran. I triuly believe that my grandmother would have killed my father that day. I never saw him again after that until I was graduating from the sixth grade. I often wondered and still do to this day why they never had him arrested. I guess in those days and still today it's such a tabu subject, it's just swept under the rug and you don't speak about it.

Anita Delande is a sixty-year-old African American widow. She is a mother, grandmother, and counselor to emotionally disturbed children. She lives in New York.
