Joseph Novotny is proud of his Czech parentage. Following World War II, the Cold War continues as the communists and non-communists face off. Joseph enters the army right after college graduation. His regiment patrols the Czech border, and he reacts to the changing political environment. He discovers himself as he sees the devastation of war and what people will do to be free. And he ponders a nagging question. If the Russians attack, how well will he fight?
