The war on drugs has been fought for more than a hundred years and it has been a colossal failure throughout that time span. That is because the American people (and just about every other country) want their drugs. We use Alcohol, Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin and a whole heap of uppers and downers to keep ourselves medicated and recreated. That demand is insatiable and eternal. The misguided fight against the use of those drugs is futile and expensive. I am not condoning the use of drugs. I am simply arguing that the war on drugs in the United States is too expensive to American society, both in money and in mayhem. The only reasonable answer is to legalize it, regulate it and tax it as steeply as wine and whisky.
