PART ONE: “KATRINA” Chapter One It is funny how we can be warned that a storm is coming, but, for some reason, we think it could hit everyone else’s house except ours. In early 2002, winds were blowing 50 mile per hour; trees were even swaying back and forth. Violent waves were crashing against the coastline of my life; yet, in spite of all the warning signs, I had not seen the storm coming. Like Hurricane Katrina, a major storm called Divorce disrupted my life. Did I deserve it? First, ask my family; then, ask “his.” This was called “the blame game.” It didn’t do much good down South, and it probably wasn’t going to help here either. All that I knew was that at thirty-five years old, I was left alone to raise two little girls, ages ten and twelve. The damage had been done, and now it was time to clean up the mess the storm had left behind! April 15, 2002 Dear God, I give you the honor, glory, and praise. My husband has been gone for one month now. I can’t breathe without him. I feel as though I want to die. If it were not for my kids and the fact that suicide is murder in your eyes, I would be planning my own death. I have bargained with you for the last forty-five days. Where are you? Can a sister get an answer? Two days later, I received my divorce papers in the mail. I felt as David did in II Samuel after he had begged God to spare the child that he and Bathsheba had conceived in sin. After David was told his son was dead, he got up, dried his eyes, and ate. For the rest of that day, I didn’t cry. Yes, my hope for reconciliation was gone, but I now had a new plan. Maybe God would put us back together again after the divorce. I figured that if I was really good and I tried really hard, He would grant my request. After all, “God specializes in things that are impossible.” As I previously said, I still had a plan, but, then, so did God. During this time in my life, I met a woman who considered herself a “prophet of God.” She wanted to be called “Prophetess,” so that is what I called her. I would visit with her three to four times a week, and she would personally minister to me. She spoke of my past and of the future that she felt God had for me. Because I was so desperate for answers from God, I ate up everything she said like a saint who had just come off a forty-day fast. When our sessions became too painful for me, emotionally – I would do what most people did when they were in painful situations. I ran, not from her – although that did not seem like a bad idea either– but from God.

Lori L Edwards, a single mother, of two college age girls, and is a student herself. She has taken on many roles in the last 43 years of her life. Mother, Business Owner, Student, Mentor, Choir director, Praise Dance coach and choreographer, Author last but not least, Servent of God. Lori L. Edwards is a native of Kokomo, Indiana. She grew up in a two parent household Christain home. She attended New Bethel Tabernacle Church. (The same church as Tavis Smiley they grew up together) She experienced many of the same obstacles of growing up in a small town church. The mentality that accompanies being raised in Holininess and being sheltered from the reality of the world outside of the church's four walls. She exposes the charade of looking saved and gets down to heart of the matter, a real relationship with Jesus Christ.
