Just say that I’m like the flowers that I grow: That after the rain of the weeping in vain, I turn to the sun of good cheer; That after the storm of the winds that blow The clouds and the driving, whirling rain, I turn to the sun, for I have no fear. I know with the rest of the world in pain, That the sun always follows the rain, That the sun’s never hurt by the rain. Chance Encounter How chance Can dance In a glance Of kindly feeling Shared, revealing Human bondage bearable If someone finds us careable, Is a wispy vagrant thought That carries neither weight nor ought– Just a human feeling shared, Of singles for a moment paired, As if To dance By chance– In a glance. March 1, 1966 Thank you … My Beautiful Samaritans Your thoughtfulness is your true wealth. A glance can carry warmth. Awareness must Escape containment, if only in a glance That speeds across all space, as if, by chance, Its penetrating warmth can touch and reach An isolate and anxious heart: a heart That needs a look to lift its sorry self as part Of many parts up into the Whole of things. Your smile can sing so clearly that it brings Resurgent Life awake with its brave song. This song, not heard as sound, is felt, is strong In restoration of the self that sought, Reminder of the common lesson taught Each day: our mortal life is brief, but long Enough for sharing what we are or may Become while doing what we can today.
