No expense was spared and no detail overlooked. Tom Jacobs stood proudly at the entrance of the Grand Ballroom of the exclusive and overpriced Jefferson Embassy Hotel. He was directing traffic and making final preparations in anticipation of the elite group of guests that would soon arrive. The afternoon and evening editions of the Washington Post both carried the same front page story for the day. The headlines read, "Senator's Daughter Rescued" and "Sarah Martin Saved" respectively. This was of course provided to them, as well as all the major papers across the country, courtesy of Tom Jacobs and team Martin. Senator Martin and his campaign manager spent more than two hours discussing the events that took place on his daughter's vacation. Their objective was to put a spin on it that would, when released to the media, provide the one most important thing to the two of them: votes! "Sympathy votes," as the campaign guru had put it. Their ideas were to have the Martin name be the story. They hoped Amy Croft would be 'Senator Martin's daughter's best friend' and Jake Dunn would be the man who saved 'Senator Martin's daughter.' One thing they both agreed on quickly was that it would be a mistake to paint Jake as a hero. The press loves a hero and they thought it a distinct possibility that Jake might become the story, leaving the Martins' as a footnote - something completely unacceptable to the Senator. Then there was the fact that Jake was still an unknown entity. They still knew very little about him and to allow an unknown into their political circle at this critical time would be a rookie mistake. Martin and Jacobs were by no means rookies. Jake was to be kept on the sidelines of this game. The veterans were going in!
