And the Joneses, basking in the sun near the only chartreuse condo in Florida, hadn't the slightest idea of what was about to happen. Across town, a teenage girl ran up the asphalt road leading to her home in Edgar. After throwing wide open the door to 1313 Chernobyl Street, she announced triumphantly, "Mom, I'm home!" No answer. "Mom," she called again, with more impatience registering in her tone, "The house is on fire!" Still no answer. "Mom!" she shrieked, demanding attention. "Iranian terrorists bombed the school and some religious fanatics are planting some signs in our yard that say, 'The Sacred Order of Monocot Worshippers: We Brake for Grass Blades!"

L. M. T. Balster is a research chemist at the University of Dayton Research Institute and earned her MA degree in English at the University of Dayton. An award-winning writer, her tales are often inspired by the fascinating world of science. Lori lives in Dayton, Ohio, with her husband and two daughters.
