When I first held him in my arms, I knew my life would never be the same. but I had no idea just how true those words would be. I knew my time would no longer be my own. I was a single woman who had adopted a hard to place infant so, of course, life would change for me. However, from the moment I first held him, the love I felt was like none other. I knew without a doubt that I would make whatever sacrifice was necessary to protect him; his needs would come first without question or regret. Suddenly this small life was more valuable than my own. I am not at all sure how this happens but I can say with certainty that the bond between a mother and her child is stronger than any I have experienced and, as such, that bond is never broken, not even by death.

Pat McGrath is retired from the field of juvenile justice after serving young people and their families for more than twenty-nine years. She lives alone in Wheaton, Illinois and spends her time reading, needlepointing and enjoying the company of good friends.
