She slowly and ever so deliberately walked out from the groves and onto the grass of the Sterling family’s front lawn. Her entrance onto the dark green carpet of grass could very well have been accompanied by the sound of eerily playing organ music. But it wasn’t. There was no noise at all-the screaming of the dog, the nightingales, and even the crickets fell unnaturally mute. The fog surrounding her would ordinarily have covered her up to her neck at its height. But it seemed to part, giving her a clear path to the place where she stopped. She turned her slight head upward and looked directly into the window from which Sterling watched. She cocked it quickly and widened her closed mouth just enough for the old man to realize that she was smiling at him. Barton’s jaw dropped open, but he didn’t move or even think of calling out to his assistant for help. All he managed to offer in return was a recollecting stare. His hand dropped from reaching for the blind down the desktop; joining his other in support of his body as he leaned more toward the window in obvious recognition of the child. He knew her. He knew every miniscule curve of her face, and she seemed to know him as well.
