DESERT FELINE SOUP-CHAPTER XIII All three felt that another trip to America was inevitable. They planned to return to Chihuahua in late summer with enough money to support them for another year. So the three hombres traveled from Chihuahua, Mexico by bus to Ojinaga, Mexico, across the border from Presidio, Texas. There, they spent a couple of days in a rundown motel, plotting and planning their trip to America. On the evening of the third day, they walked to the outskirts of Ojinaga and sought a safe place to cross the Rio Bravo, away from the peering binoculars of the U.S. Border Patrol. The three daring illegals then trekked the Sierra Vieja mountain range and the treacherous Chihuahuan desert while daring the blistering sun. They headed due North with the Dilihunt ranch as their final destination. In their backpacks they carried flour tortillas, a bag of Pinole (a type of corn mush, usually seasoned with cinnamon sugar) salt and pepper wrapped in tin foil and jugs of water. One man also carried a large empty aluminum can to use as a cook pot, should the need arise. The homemade “pot” would prove to be a life saver for the daring trio. Their illegal expedition proved to be a harsh one as they found themselves four days later, hot and exhausted, deep in the western Chihuahuan desert without any water or food. They tried hard to recall the location of windmills and livestock dirt tanks along the path to a better life and more American money. They finally arrived at a windmill with a large, tall steel holding tank. As they approached the tank to get a much needed drink of water, they noticed an unfortunate bobcat floating in the water. The water level in the tank was low and the bobcat apparently leaned in to get a drink of water, fell and drowned. They rushed quickly to get the cat out of the tank and noticed that its body was not bloated. This could mean that the cat had not been in the water very long. The three hungry ‘hombres’ drank windmill water to their satisfaction then focused on the bobcat carcass

It was a delight to read and hard to put down. The descriptions were so vivid; "As the brisk winds of late autumn escorted leaves to the ground," that the events, and scenery were brought to life in my mind as if I too were experiencing them! It is an out of control human migration machine that must be dealt with in a swift yet humane manner. ‘We the People’ of the United States of America must quit stalling on this issue. Illegal immigration is not a ‘love Republicans/hate Democrats issue’- it is an AMERICAN ISSUE. Together, with a pencil, a prayer and a law book in our hands, we should be able to resolve this issue. This is America after all; we have the technology, the know-how and the numbers (Uh…I think…right?) so what is our real problem? ABOUT THE AUTHOR BORN: Maria Luisa Sanchez on January 27th, 1954 at Southwestern General Hospital in El Paso, Texas to illegal immigrant parents. The author’s passion for writing began in the 5th grade in Toyah, Texas. Her teacher engaged the class in oral reading, poetry, short story writing and rhyming. Fond memories of her 5th grade class eventually led her to a local university where she, the first one of seven ‘first generation Americans’ earned a bachelor’s degree and a Texas teacher’s certificate. Maria Luisa Sanchez-Miranda is currently working on a novel and a series of childrens books. AMERICAN MONEY...and the Flow of Illegal Immigration on the Rio Grande however, is still her favorite book, based on her favorite place in West Texas, the Rustler Springs ranch.
