The sudden bright light bouncing off the expanse of white was almost too much to look upon. Instinctively I raised my hand to shield my eyes. In that same moment, as the glare was reduced, I could see figures looking down, standing stock-still as if frozen in time amid all the white. Strange, I thought. What was happening? Was everyone suddenly playing some strange version of the children’s game of statues? No, it couldn’t be that, I answered myself rather stupidly. People don’t usually yell when playing that old playground favorite, do they? For yelling, screaming and other shrill sounds, indicative of shock and fear, did indeed fill the air. I think it was all the noise that finally caused me to follow the direction of their stares with my own eyes, only to find that no amount of squinting could block out the eerie horror that now lay exposed. One pale bluish disembodied hand stretched skyward with fingers extended in helpless supplication.

To escape the holiday blues and the cold and monotony of winter, sixty-something widows and best friends, Wendy and Amie happily head south to attend the wedding of Wendy’s environmentally conscious nephew.
Snow and murder follow the women, and Wendy is once more forced to put her puzzle-solving skills to work to identify the killer. Amie warns her that accusing someone of murder is not like a puzzle where a mistake can be simply erased. Further complicating matters, the possibility of romance threatens the friend’s relationship.
Part travelogue combined with an old-fashion murder mystery, Sinister Snowbirds is the second in a series featuring the adventures of Wendy and Amie.

Susan Howard Solar, originally from New Jersey, is a graduate of Rowan University and a former high school English teacher. She is married, raised two children, and currently resides in northern New Hampshire. Solar is also the author of Lethal Leaf Peepers.
