The evidence you write about must follow the infamous ‘C’ words that you will hear until you are sick of them. Originally there were five of these little gems, but I suggest considering the great eight: You must write: Crisply—short, to the point sentences. Clearly—explain everything and never assume anything. Correctly—proper grammar goes without saying. Concisely—get to the point and move on. Kill the fluff. Convincingly—build an effective wall of evidence & make sure the evidence meets the standards. Contextually—put the appropriate information in the right places. Creatively—not dry, dull, and disjointed. Use your voice in your writing. Completely—answer all questions, prompts, and bullets. Now, let’s get down to serious analysis. As stated earlier, these two samples do not represent any particular type of writing entry for the NBPTS portfolio. They are merely writing samples based upon an instructional prompt. In both, the key elements (good and bad) have been underlined for you. Analyze the underlined parts of both scenarios and describe why you think they were cited. You should circle, underline, note, highlight anecdote, etc., on this page. You may use your own paper if you like. Remember, this is just a writing from a prompt. Here, we’re just going to see how well you recognize and analyze general writing. (Actual portfolio writing practice will come later). When you have thoroughly analyzed both samples, go to the Appendix at the end of the book and look at my annotations.

About the Book

This workbook is designed to be used either individually, or in a group workshop setting, and contains numerous useable worktables containing the vital elements of NBPTS writing. The workbook is written in a casual, conversational manner, unlike other pedantic tomes which may only serve to confuse the busy candidate.
Using this workbook, the candidate will:
- dissect, analyze, and apply the NBPTS Core Propositions to their own classroom
- analyze and utilize the well-researched characteristics of Accomplished Teaching
- practice the three writing forms required for NBPTS portfolios
- annotate practice writing samples for accomplished writing features the NBPTS wants to see
- help structure effective lesson plans and Documented Accomplishment models based on NBPTS guidelines
- utilize practice tests to assess knowlege of entry requirements
About the Author
Jerry Parks earned B.S., M.A., & Ed.S degrees in education from Eastern Kentucky University, and completed additional graduate work at the University of Kentucky. He became a National Board Certified Teacher in 2002, and has received numerous “Teacher of the Year” honors at the local, state, and national level. He is a member of the USA-TODAY All-American Teacher Team, was recently inducted into the National Teachers’ Hall of Fame. He is a regular speaker at National Middle School Association conferences, and has served as a Regional Coordinator for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in the state of Kentucky. He is currently instructor of social studies at Georgetown Middle School in Georgetown, Kentucky.
