About the Book

This book of poetry is a unique collection – spanning over twenty years of living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Written at different times, the poems nonetheless share many themes in common including the dialectic between speaking and remaining silent; the need to have control over one’s body and self-image; the difficulty of maintaining relationships (e.g., being a daughter, mother, wife, sister, friend) while dealing with PTSD, and the process of “healing” and reaching out to others with care and compassion. It is not, however, only meaningful to those with PTSD; the poems in this volume also reflect the experience of growing up as a woman in a sexist society and the need to recreate and recapture our history, literature, and love for each other and for ourselves.

About the Author

Clair Itey holds a Ph.D. in Education and has published three academic books in the field, under another name. She is currently writing two more. Dr. Itey has read her poetry throughout the United States and Europe. This is her first published collection of poems. As the title suggests, these poems -- which span over 20 years -- reflect upon her experience living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Common themes are the dialectic between speaking and silences; control over ones body and self-image; mourning the losses of family members, healing, and building new relationships with her family (e.g., as a mother, wife, daughter, sister, etc.). A feminist, Dr. Itey believes these poems will speak to all women; not just those suffering from PTSD. Nonetheless, she hopes this collection will reach out to many brave women who have suffered greatly, who have experienced trauma, and are trying to put their lives back together -- one step at a time.
