Less than a year ago, my life resembled organized chaos. My sister died suddenly, work seemed meaningless and I questioned my relationships with friends and loved ones. Although I was unaware at the time, the recent upheaval in my life spawned within me a great awakening. “What do I want from life?” I asked myself. “Well…I want to be happy.” So I began to question, how do you attain happiness? It appeared that I had many reasons to be happy: at 22 I purchased a home, had a career that paid a six figure annual salary, minimal debt and I dined out and enjoyed healthy relationships. I recognized however, that while I felt proud of my accomplishments and the success that I achieved, I still felt a void. I was not happy. It was at this point that I began to challenge the societal rules that I allowed to define my sense of happiness. What I came to understand is that while I set goals for myself, I had never taken the time to explore what constitutes happiness for me.

Renard lives in New York City and is currently pursuing his doctorate degree in psychology.
