CHAPTER 11 RATIOS AND PROPORTIONS A ratio is a comparison between two or more quantities. It is the number of times one quantity contains the other. Ratios can be expressed as a fraction , as a: b or a to b. Example, the ratio of boys to girls in your class is or 1: 4. Simplifying Ratios Note: When simplifying ratios, we must first express them in the same units. Problem: Write the following ratios in their simplest forms: a) $5 : 200¢ b) 25 m : 250 cm c) 90 min : 3 ½ hrs Solutions: a) 1$ = 100¢, hence, 5$ = 5 × 100¢ = 500¢, = or 5: 2. b) 1m = 100cm, hence, 25m = 25 × 100 = 2500 cm, = or 10: 1. c) 1 hr = 60 minutes, hence, 3 hrs = 3 ½ × 60 = 210 minutes, or 3: 7 Rates A rate is a ratio that compares quantities of different units.

About the Author
Colin A Ferreira is a Trained Mathematics Teacher. He also holds a Diploma and a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science and an M.B.A (Hons). Mr. Ferreira formerly headed the Mathematics Department of Jordan Prince Williams High. He has been teaching Mathematics for the past 14 years at the junior and senior high levels. Mr. Ferreira currently lives with his wife and two sons in Nassau, The Bahamas where he teaches Computer Science and Mathematics at Aquinas College.
