Finish the Journey; A Man’s Guide Through Divorce, is an all-in-one book written specifically for men living through divorce. My 268 page manuscript is ready for review upon request.
Over 1,000,000 couples divorce annually in the United States. This leaves approximately 500,000 men each year searching for answers and guidance. A major selling point of this book can be found in its simplicity. I believe the average man requires information to be direct and concise. Men do not generally respond well to being lectured to—especially in a very clinical tone.
Simply put, men want to hear from people who speak from experience, but with a clear tone of mutual respect. I provide that sound balance of life experience and supportive research. A divorcing friend who read my manuscript said, “You feel you’re sitting on a barstool talking with a good buddy who’s extremely well informed about divorce. You want to know more.”
I can also see many women buying this book for their sons, brothers, friends, etc. One of my proofreaders (a woman in her 60s) said, “I wish this book were around when my son got divorced. He went through hell. I would have bought it to help him.”
I’ve interviewed hundreds of men during the past two years; most are very emotional and searching for answers. However, men are often banished into the stereotype of being insensitive womanizers. Nothing could be further from the truth. Men are emotional, men are sensitive, and men are affected by divorce in ways that are traumatic to our very heart, mind, and soul. I provide the guidance to balance the mental, physical, and emotional aspects of divorce.
I chose to write this book in 2007, shortly after my own separation. I quickly discovered there are very few resources to support the average man suffering through divorce. Most of what I found for men detailed two main ideas; how to protect one’s financial assets, and how to re-enter the dating world. Although neither is a bad topic to research (and I touch on both in my book), I was desperately searching for something written specifically for men detailing the entire divorce experience.
Within a month of my separation, I began compiling copious notes about all of my experiences and emotions. I translate this information into a unique first-hand account into my entire journey through divorce. I also share many relevant stories and experiences from other men I interviewed and situations I researched. Although divorce is an extremely individual experience, I discovered many common themes that offer support and guidance for most men.
My book specifically details the following:
•Understanding what went wrong
•Healthy ways to accept responsibility
•Advice to help the children adjust while becoming a better single parent
•Real strategies to make it through the dark days of emotional depression
•Dealing with the physical and mental effects of stress
•Selecting the proper therapist and getting the most from counseling
•Descriptions of possible mental conditions and temporary medications to consider
•Re-entering the dating world in a way that best fits each individual
•Dealing with your ex-wife dating someone new
•Handling minor and major conflicts with your ex, both during and after divorce
•Detailed advice about legal issues, selecting the right attorney, productive mediation, child custody, etc.
•Managing divorce and post-divorce finances
•Building a better life following divorce
•And much, much more…
