I am sitting in the middle of a juniper bush bargaining with a gigantic, wooly monster. This juniper bush may appear harmless at first glance, but its needles are impaling me with even the slightest change in position. And the foliage gives off a distinctive odor, somewhere between cat pee and skunk. Every time I shift to wake up my sleeping feet, the smell seems to get stronger. I know it’s permeating my clothes. I imagine it will never leave. How am I supposed to attract the attention of my one true love in a positive way if I smell like a litter box?

Catherine Walker-Gilman has been an educator of middle-level students for fourteen years, and a writer at heart for as long as she can remember. Margin Notes is a tribute to the hundreds of students who have been a part of her world. Catherine and her family live in Denver, Colorado.
