There is only one other vehicle in the parking lot, parked about two stalls over. This is a very fancy Cadillac Baritz convertible with all the gold: grill, hub caps, mirrors and trim. I go in to have breakfast & coffee with Megg, who already has all the food packed and is ready to get going. We enjoy a leisurely breakfast and have our last cups of coffee. As I step outside with the large cooler, Cinnamon is going ballistic, growling and barking at the guy with the Cadillac Baritz. He is backed up against the door of the Baritz and looks as if he is about to be eaten alive. His golf bag is on the ground by his back door and he is desperately trying to get a club out. He is definitely something neither of us had seen before. He is dressed like he has just came from an audition for a part in the Lockharts or a Laurel and Hardy movie, wearing a pair of yellow and green plaid golfing knickers, bright yellow socks with the knickers tucked in, and a shiny green shirt partially covered by a yellow and green vest with diagonal print and a green and yellow plaid beret pulled forward. I could understand why Cinnamon was barking but I spoke to her and she stopped. As I place the cooler in the wagon, I notice the golfer gentleman looking at our sad excuse for transportation. It is obvious he does not approve of my old beater with an inch of clay all around it. My left headlight is duct taped together and held in by a bungee cord and the grill is gone from colliding with an overgrown bambi about a month earlier. The gentleman has a very puzzled look on his face, to which I stated, “Yes, she might not look the greatest anymore, but she is still my deer killing, goose chasing, moose hunting buggy, and she has earned the right to be parked with the very best of the great ones.”

About the Author
About the Author The author moved from North Dakota to Northern Minnesota with his family at age four. The older boys would let him tag along to carry their game…there he became interested in wildlife and hunting. He acquired his first firearm, a single shot twenty-two at age nine and became a crack shot. He shot his first deer (a doe) at age eleven, his first buck (a ten pointer) at age thirteen. This started his lifetime of hunting. While living next to the Mississippi River, he also acquired a keen interest in fishing. After marriage in 1954, he moved to Grand Marais, Minnesota. While there he learned carpentry and various forms of construction which became his trade. After following construction booms for six years, he eventually settled in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis to raise his five children; however, he and his family kept in close contact with the Grand Marais area. Lake Superior, the north shore, and the Gunflint Trail presented many challenges for survival. Lake Superior nearly claimed his life on three different occasions while wild animals challenged him on seven different encounters…moose on three, black bear on two, deer on one, and timber wolves on one. He is now retired and living on his forty acres of wilderness southwest of Hill City, Minnesota.
