My story is a classic tale of personal integrity in the most dishonest palce imaginable, of courage amidst brutality. When a stand up prison guard is ordered by the prison's Warden and the Internal Affairs Unit to report on growing atrocities committed by my own colleagues as their own prison gang is known as "The Green Wall," my life is set on a life-and-death struggle for survival as entire groups and systems abandon or turn against me. My efforrts to expose "The Green Wall" gang were betrayed by the prison Warden and stonewalled by his superiors in a Office of the Inspector General's Report. I was labeled a snitch and ostracized, my career destroyed, and my life threatened so often, in a dangerous enviroment, that I was forced into hiding and become a Government witness. America's prisons have become a dysfunctional institution, factories of violence run by savage gangs on both sides of the law. This is the story of how they got that way, told though the experience of a man who tried to stop it, It's both an important story and a good one. My televised State Senate Testimony on January 20, 2004 exposed a scandal that led to terminations, sudden retiremnts, and reforms of the system that are still underway. I also have been interviewed by Fox News worldwide and been featured in several news papers throughout the United States. I also have been featured on the documentary film from England called, "Americas Brutal Prisons," which has been showing currently at film festivals. About the Book
The career of Donald "D.J." Vodicka encompassed the rapid expansion of the prison system. For sixteen years, he was a prison guard in California’s highest security prisons, serving meals to gang leaders, serial killers in lockdown cells, and patrolling exercise yards filled with violent felons while unarmed and outnumbered 1000-to-2. He belonged to an elite unit called the Investigative Services Unit (Internal Affairs), responsible for solving horrific crimes inside the walls. He was a decorated veteran officer. He became the largest "whistle-blower" to uncover a group of rogue prison guards who called themselves "The Green Wall."
About the Author
D. J. Vodicka was born in Camarillo, California. In 1988, after serving four years in the US Army, he entered the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in Galt, California. His admirable work ethic and reputation furthered his honorable career in law enforcement. He currently resides in the United States.
