The sound occurred again, becoming more distinct. All four of the children, now wide awake, huddled around their dog and listened. With her trembling voice Emily Grace managed to utter, "We can't see you. Who's there?" From out of the darkness, a mysterious voice said, "I've warned you kids to stay away from here. Didn't you see the sign? Why did you come back?" The female voice sounded familiar. Emily Grace tried to remember where she had heard it before. Then it happened. A flickering candle appeared at the bedroom door, illuminating a figure covered in black. The shadow of the person seemed to move and change shape with the flickering light from the candle. For a long minute, the children were speechless. They froze.

A ghost in a deserted log cabin and an Indian spirit lurking in the surrounding woods are not what the four Plumroy cousins expected to encounter during a two-week summer vacation at their grandparents' home. They become amateur detectives as they investigate how the ghost, the Indian spirit, and three mysterious totem trees are related. As they seek answers to this mystery, they realize they are not the only ones searching for a solution.
About the Author
JIM S. POWELL enjoyed forty years in the communication field before his retirement in 1999. Jim is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, receiving a Bachelor of Journalism Degree. He received a Master of Arts Degree from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. He is the author of two other books: "Feed Sack Fashions and Other Childhood Memories" and "Them's Funny Looking Catfish and More Childhood Memories." Both of these books contain delightful and warm tales about his growing up in Chandler, Texas, in the 1940s. Today, he and his wife Ann live in Tyler, Texas, and enjoy traveling with their two daughters and granddaughter, Callie.
