Customary Laws in Southern Sudan

This book is one of many books published in few last years to the Sudan to meet international interest for more information about, although the largest in Africa, but almost unknown country. Although the previously long-running civil war in southern Sudan internationally heard upon, however the Dar Fur conflict and within it committed atrocities drawn more international interested and experienced more international community solidarity to make the conflict an end and provide help and assistance for the suffering people in the region. In spite of so such bad news from Sudan, signature of the Peace Agreement between the GOS and SPLM/A ending the long lasting civil war in Southern Sudan was on of the few good news from Sudan. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement is first milestone to rebuild the South and to restore security and order destroyed or diminished through more than thirty years war. Rebuilding the south need to be conducted in all sectors specially the legal sector that is to be the basic for any kind of social and economical development in southern Sudan. Southern Sudanese hold more than any others tribes in remaining regions of Sudan firm on their tradition and identity, which suffered repeatedly from ignorance, destruction and manipulation whether by occupiers or by northern governments. Customary laws are basic element and product of this identity expression of long-standing ethnical based legal knowledge. However, this book titled “customary law in southern Sudan” it is to present simple contribution to the tradition of customary laws of Dinka and Nuer which build together with Shilluk and Azande the vast majority of southern Sudanese population
