When Ked was the only City employee on the City Manager’s management team to complete an assignment that the City Manager had requested from everyone who reported directly to him on the specified time, this City Manager criticized Ked’s report in the presence of the higher ranking managers by reminding them of the assignment and telling them that he did not need a 5 page research paper from them as he held Ked’s report up so that everyone could see it. In the next City Manager’s staff meeting, City Manager Saban, in the presence of all of his department heads, verbally reprimanded Ked for not complying with a request that he thought that he had asked Ked to have ready for the meeting. When Ked said very politely that he had not been given any assignment for this meeting, City Manager Saban became violently angry and said, “Are you challenging me?” As there was silence throughout the room, Ked softly said, “May I be excused for a moment, sir?” And City Manager Saban said authoritatively, “Why?” And Ked said confidently, “I would like to get my minutes on the last meeting and read them back to you so that everyone here can be clear on what transpired.” Then there was this minute of silence and City Manager Saban said, “Minutes. Oh, I should have known that you keep track of everything that is said and done around here. Just forget the entire matter.” After the above, whenever Ked completed any task satisfactorily that City Manager Saban asked him to complete, the City Manager would tell Ked to give it to Joal so that Joal could present it to him and the staff with Ked present. This was this City Manager’s way of showing all of his managers that he was as dishonorable as the previous leaders toward Ked, even after he had proclaimed publicly that he was a Christian. In essence, City Manager Saban treated Ked as if he was there, but not there and an expert going no where under his administration. Ked’s office was now adjacent to the City Manager’s Office with a door between them. Three months after the arrival of Saban, a major renovation of the City Manager’s wing under the supervision of Blab, Ked’s relative, began with everyone involved being notified except Ked. Ked was left in the middle of the renovation as everyone else was moved to safe locations. With talk going all over the place and the construction worker’s complaining about an employee still being housed in their work area, Ked was then moved into the City’s old Vault with no windows for three months. When he got sick and rashes broke out all over his body, Ked was moved out of City Hall and into the basement of a bank building where water from the sewage pipes leaked constantly. There the Director of the Auditing Department complained that it was inhuman to treat anyone the way that Ked was being treated and that he did not want to be viewed as a person sanctioning management’s actions by permitting Ked to be housed in an area of his office that was unusable and not fit for human habitation. Then Ked was moved back to City Hall to the old Budget office and assigned the duties of an energy coordinator that required an engineering degree by City Manager Saban. City Manager Saban’s comment as he gave Ked the duties were, “I have been told that you can perform any job proficiently and effectively around here and now I expect the same outstanding quality of work from you even though this area of work is outside your training and expertise. And further more, you will no longer report to me, but to Joal, who is now my assistant.”
To further test Ked’s endurance, Ked was told to work directly with the City Engineer Bohman to find out exactly what was required of an energy coordinator. This little short man was known for not getting along with anyone within City Government. When Ked met with Bohman, Bohman made it very clear to Ked and City Manager Saban that it was impossible for Ked to do engineering duties without the proper training. Then Bohman assigned one of his engineers called Dug to work with Ked. After which time Bohman gathered up all of his clerical duties that had been overdue for the past three years in his office and sent them to the vault where Ked was being housed at the time. As everyone in the outer office looked on as the many boxes were hauled into the vault, Ked wrote return to the sender and a note which read: “If you want a puppy to play with, buy one because I am not the one this day or any day forthcoming.” Bohman never spoke to Ked again and transferred Dug out of his office to work with Ked permanently. Six months later, Bohman became critically ill and died of inoperable cancer. Many employees said that Ked had put a curse on him, because Bohman was unable to speak for several days after reading Ked’s note that was attached to his returned clerical papers.
Having been exposed to the most inhumane working conditions possible, Ked became seriously ill without even being aware of it. As he was driving into work one morning, he lost his ability to talk, became dizzy, and started throwing up yellow mucous. He almost lost his ability to drive, but he managed to make it to the hospital. The doctor in the family practice unit saw him immediately and spent hours trying to calm him down, medicate him and to get him to talk rationally. When he was able to talk, the doctor told him that he had to quit his job if he wanted to live. She further said that she had never had a patient who was being treated so inhumanely in her entire career. Immediately, she made an appointment for Ked to see the hospital psychiatrist that same day. Ked met and talked with the psychiatrist for several months at least twice a week. The psychiatrist prescribed prosaic for Ked and told him that if his working conditions did not change, he would surely have a nervous breakdown. During this treatment, Ked went to work everyday and did not even let his oppressors know that his health was failing. All Ked could think about was the welfare of his daughter and his mother and the thought of wrong winning over right. Ked could not and would not accept that GOD wanted him to fail for succeeding. City Manager Saban was determined to make Ked fail at some task within City Government, even if it meant killing him. At this point and time in his career with City Government, Ked was the only employee out of over 1800 employees assigned duties that he had not expressed an interest in and denied access to any position that he expressed an interest in and was qualified for.
