From the Prologue: "Billy! They found the body!" Jacob Garrard whispers. Then, louder, "Hello! Billy? You there? Wake up! What took you so long to pick up the phone?" Oh shit! He was dead. Is dead. "How do you know? I mean, how did you find out. Who told you. Who found the body? You mean . . . him, right?" "No, I mean Earl Long. Jesus, Billy. For someone who is supposed to be smart, you can ask the dumbest questions. Just listen, and hold off the twenty questions, okay? They found him in the pool. Must have washed downstream by the high water from the storm last night." Being an accessory to murder is bad enough, but if Stella finds out what else I have done . . . . Well, some things are worse than murder. Like doing things that are so bad that if your mother found out it would kill her. "How did they know it was him? I mean, it's been a while. Plenty time for . . . ." "His jacket. Remember he was wearing a black leather jacket? Well, he still had it on when they found him." An image of a dark rotting leather-jacketed mass bobbing up and down in the water of the pool at Magnolia Park forms in Billy's mind. He imagines that the sour taste of his morning-breath is from some putrid liquid seeping out of this brain into his mouth. "What are you gonna do?" "What am I gonna do? You mean we, don't you? You're in this up to your eyeballs just like me." "How do you figure that? It wasn't me that kicked him." "Don't start with that again. Besides it doesn't matter who did what to him. Let's just say, beteween the two of us, that we remember it differently and let it go with that. It wasn't like either one of us wanted to kill him. For all we knew he could have been an alligator. The two of us together chose to agree not tell anyone about it. The law says we're equally guilty no matter who did what. The important thing is that we stick to the story we came up with for the cops. We've been over and over this. Do you remember what we decided?" Billy hears a click. Jonnie has turned the tables. She has listened in on his [party line] call.

About the Book

About the Author
The author was born in Louisiana in 1941. He has a B. S. degree from a southern university and a Ph. D. from a midwestern university. He was on the faculty of the psychiatry department of a medical school in Ohio for twenty-seven years; he is now an associate professor emeritus.
