About the Author

Maria Elena Amador was born in San José Costa Rica, where she received her primary, secondary and undergraduate university education. She first came to New Orleans as a graduate student at Tulane University. She received her Master’s degree in Biology and a Ph.D. degree in Biology with a specialty in Tropical Ecology at Tulane University. She has taught at various universities in New Orleans and she is the author of scientific publications, editor and translator of numerous scientific and non-scientific publications. She is the co-author of several manuals of English-Spanish phrases and vocabulary for Hispanic workers published in California. She has also conducted bilingual seminars in English and Spanish for hotel workers, administrators and general employees who wanted or needed to learn the “other language”. Recently, she earned a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Louisiana State University. She currently works at a local private university, where she teaches Information Literacy. She has always had a fascination for different languages, the origins of words and their traditional usage, local cuisine and good foods. She has been a transplanted New Orleanian for over 30 years and proudly calls her home New Orleans. She is an avid traveler and has literally traveled all over the world. But, her favorite streets are in New Orleans.
