As early as the Civil War, it was known as "Da Costa’s Syndrome." During World War I, it was called “shell shock” and in World War II, soldiers suffered from “battle fatigue.” It was not until the war in Vietnam that clinicians first began to characterize this condition as “posttraumatic stress disorder” or PTSD. Although the condition is certainly not restricted to the military since virtually anyone who experiences a traumatic or “toxic” event can experience PTSD, it has still been closely associated with the armed forces. Consequently, today, as the United States fights wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, with the potential for other conflicts brewing around the world, the lessons learned from treating people who suffer from PTSD become even more important for clinicians who seek to treat these combat veterans and others with this potentially debilitating condition.

This body of research provides a "snapshot" look at PTSD issues and addresses the question; "Is the Veterans Aministration medical facilities prepared for the upcoming mass influx of our vets suffering with PTSD?
About the Author
Randy has lived in numerous places in the United States and several foreign countries. He has completed a twenty-year plus military career and retired from the Army, not life. He has gone from being a high school drop-out earning a doctorate's degree in psychology. Randy earned his Bachelor's degree from The Evergreen State University, a Master's degree from the University of Oklahoma and his PhD is from Calamus International University in London, UK. During his life Randy has worn many career hats. Out of more than 40 "hats" he is most proud of being a soldier, Hypnotherapist, Mental Health Therapist and a Chemical Dependency Counselor. Treating PTSD is one of his specialities and PTSD is a personal issue as well having endured a twenty-year military career.
