"If I had a crew, I would've attached this jury rig to the bow, but with a dentist and a boy for a crew, the stern will have to do." Back in the cabin Borman told Jason to keep watch while he got some sleep. With two black eyes, a crooked nose and toilet paper stuffed in each nostril, Jay nodded his head. "Honey, you'd better lie down, I'll go on watch," Tess said while getting her foul-weather gear on and looking for her sou'wester. "Okay, but don't go on deck, just stick your head out of the hatch, okay? Have a look around," Jason said. "What am I looking for, Jay?" Tess asked. "Just other boats or ships, there's no land around for hundreds of miles." "Here, Jay take these asprin before you lie down and make sure your leeboard is up." Tess made her way up the ladder and poked her head out into the storm. She was frightened by what she encountered. Huge waves, howling wind, a cockpit full of green water, visibility down to near zero. "Oh my God. Oh my God. If I ever survive this storm I'll never go sailing again in my life." Tess said as she retreated to the main cabin. The water over the cabin floor alarmed her. "Captain Mark." Tess yelled as she opened the aft cabin door. "Now what's the problem? Christ," Borman said. "The water is over the floor-boards!" Tess yelled in panic. "Well turn the pump on, damn it," Borman yelled. "The pump is on. Damn it." Tess yelled back. "Ah, the drain must be plugged. I'll have a look at it," Borman said as he made his way to where the bilge pump was located. He removed the floor boards. "Jesus Christ, there's teabags covering the drain. No wonder there's water in the cabin. I thought I told you guys to secure everything down below before this storm hit," Borman said. "Captain, we're guests on your stinking boat. We've not seasoned sailors, and we are doing the best we can. So just shut your big mouth and unplug the drain." Tess was reaching down for all she had. "You've a feisty bitch, now aren't you? Lets say we get together for some shore leave when this little cruise is over," Borman said as he cleared out the intake of the bilge pump. "I'll shore leave you with a bottle over the head if you don't start acting like the captain you should be." Tess was fighting back like a bear with cubs. She had an injured husband, two sick kids, and a crazy captain. She was at her wits' end. The captain stood up as the water started to drain out. He gave Tess a smile and returned to his cabin. Tess sat down and cried.

When the crew of the Argo Merchant spots a small, yellow inflatable dinghy bobbing in the Caribbean’s bright blue waters, they find twelve-year-old Bobby White aboard. Barely alive, the crew takes her to the Island of St. Vincent.
Taken in by St. Vincent’s Chief Inspector Dupree and his wife, Bobby slowly recovers her memory. What she remembers deepens the mystery. When the captain of the schooner on which she and her family were traveling appears in the marketplace, Bobby is stunned. Why is he here? Where is her family?
Bobby is plunged into the Island’s underbelly as she endeavors to discover her family’s fate. Inspector Dupree wants to help Bobby, who he’s come to care for as a daughter. But he must also guard the secrets he’s been concealing from his government. He begins to walk a thin line between looking the other way as illegal merchandise moves through the island and caring for the little girl who appeared from the sea.
