The Adventures of Emily and Bella the Horse

Angie was glad Bella was so surefooted. She relaxed into the saddle and tried not to think about her stomach rumbling. “Well, what do you think Bell? Are we headed in the right direction?” With that Bella lifted her head; she smelled something in the wind strangely familiar. The rain was light and steady now, not the big fat drops of the storm, but the after rain. It kept Angie damp but she was drying off mostly aside from her shoulders and hat. She was starting to warm up for the first time since falling in the creek. Bella’s warm body helped. Bella expertly weaved around stumps and rocks, trees and puddles. Angie was always careful to keep the creek in sight so that she would not get lost. She was definately farther away from home than she had ever been but she was beginning to gain confidence that she would at least get home even if she couldn’t find the cows. Bella kept popping up her head. She was sure she smelled something that reminded her of home. She veered off course a little and Angie was concerned that she would lose sight of the creek. Angie could hear the rushing current but she had wound around a small knoll and it obscured her view of the stream. Angie tried to pull Bella back toward the water. “Come on Bell. I don’t want to get lost.” Bella just kept moving forward away from the stream. She fought Angie all the way to the edge of the tree line. When they got off of the deer path, Angie could see that there was a little meadow and some movement in the tall grass. Bella stopped. Angie was concerned about what they would find out there. Bella whinnied and started moving forward, sure of what she saw and smelled.
