About the Book

Picture this: Bonn is still the capital of Germany. Beneath its bucolic exterior the small town seethes with mystery and intrigue. Diplomats, government officials and spies mingle at fancy cocktail parties. Radical terrorists build bombs in their basements.

Back in the USA, Maggie Bloom knows none of this. She is so undone at the sight of her ex-husband and his young, bouncy bimbo, she is dangerously close to finding toothpaste in her hair and her underwear on the outside of her clothes. In the interest of improved mental health, she lets her oldest friend talk her into an extended visit to Bonn.

Her hopes for a healing hiatus are dashed when she finds a dead neighbor in the goldfish pond of her rented house. The police accuse her of murder. She has no family, few close friends and a wobbly grasp of the language. She tries Xanax and when that fails, she goes on the lam. For one terrifying weeken Maggie manages to elude the persistent police inspector and discover the truth. As she hunts for the murderer, she outwits a bunch of skinheads, foils a bomb plot and traps her neighbor’s killer

This is the first book in the Maggie Bloom series—the prequel to A Yacht To Die For, A String of Perils and Just Buried.

About the Author

Linda Clayton has been writing mysteries ever since she read her first Nancy Drew. During high school and college she wrote plays, stories, and songs. She married, moved to Europe and quite logically, since she'd spent most of her life writing, began a thirty year career as a portrait painter. It’s not as strange as it sounds. Creativity is creativity. It simply took a different form for all those years. During her time overseas, she learned languages and all about the pleasures and pitfalls of living in a foreign country, experiences that came in handy when writing Black Tie and Tails. When she finally settled down in the Lowcountry, she stopped painting and began to write the Maggie Bloom mysteries, which is the most satisfying—creatively speaking—thing she has ever done. She loves inventing characters and putting them into exciting situations. Linda Clayton lives in South Carolina with Wally, an English cocker spaniel and Willy, a cockapoo. She is hard at work on the fifth Maggie Bloom mystery.
