THE SECRETS OF JESSICA GABLE

The meal was a success. Stomachs were filled; cigars were lit and the scotch was poured for those who wanted something a little stronger. Groups had formed, and many had crowded around the outdoor fire pits to stay warm. Several conversations were going on around her when Charleigh asked Henry Stephens, “By chance, would you happen to know or have you ever heard the name Jessica Gable?” Startled, Henry dropped his drink. Ignoring the scotch glass that had shattered at his feet, as well as the amber liquid that was absorbed into the grassy carpet below, the older man stared at her in shock. He took a step toward her. “I’m sorry. Did you say Jessica Gable?” Conversation around them ceased and other guests took notice. Charleigh glanced around them. “Did I say something wrong?” she asked, embarrassed. “No, no. Not at all, but how do you know that name, if I may ask?” She gave a small laugh and explained, “I was repairing a wall in my home and found her name on the inside one of the pieces of drywall, I found,” she fabricated slightly. “I was only curious who she was, that’s all.” “I see,” he stated. “Was that all, just a name? Nothing else? Nothing at all…?” “Henry! Enough!” Mattie Henderson emphasized with enough authority to quiet the man and save Charleigh from answering. Charleigh still stood next to the elderly gentleman, not knowing what to do or what to expect. Mattie saved her again by further explaining. “Charleigh, several years ago an elderly woman lived in the same house that you now occupy. She was something else, I mean, she was the type of woman who said exactly what she wanted, and to whomever she wanted and the consequences be damned. She didn’t look like she was filled with that type of vigor, but...” Mattie gave a small laugh and continued, “That woman had more gusto than anyone I ever met, and although it already has been seven years since she passed, I swear I have never met anyone who could match or outwit our Jessica Gable.”
