About the Author
In 2004 my husband Nigel announced that he had been offered a fantastic job in Sanfrancisco. At the time I had a wonderful career as a Reflexologist, we had a 10 month old baby and our other three kids were well established in school. We lived in a beautiful 200 year old cottage in a semi rural location and in a community to die for, AND all within commuting distance of central London. Why on Earth would we want to move? After much deliberation we decided that this would be too much of an adventure to miss out on, and so the decision was made. On March 17th 2004 we flew out of England to start a new life in California. Within weeks of our arrival I began writing a mass email to friends and family telling them about our new life. It became a diary of sorts, chronicling the good, the bad and the downright awful aspects of our move. It was a way, for me, to channel my anxieties and frustrations of how difficult it was to move to a country which speaks the same language as me and yet was so foreign in culture and attitude to me that I may have well moved to Timbuktoo! In 2007 , after much thought and deliberation we realised the 'American Dream' was not all it was cracked up to be and we made the decision to return home to England. We are now, happily ensconsed back home. I am back working as a Nurse in the local hospital, we are loving being surrounded by history and culture and life is really good. The children are all happy and content and live in a very diverse environment both socially and culturally. They are developing into wonderful, open minded individuals with a healthy lust for life and an appreciation of all things different. I am incredibly proud of each of them.
