About the Book

ONCE UPON A TIME is a collection of flying stories. They come from a man who loved and lived to fly, whose experiences and friendships formed the inspiration of this collection. It travels through basic flight training in the Deep South to flying F-86 Sabre Jets in Asia. The reader can travel back to a heroic age of pilots and aircraft.

About the Author

Born in Los Angeles and raised in both the Philippines and Carmel California, young James always loved planes. While attending Carmel high school, Jim entered the V-5 program. He attended UC Berkeley, and studied engineering under the GI Bill. Determined to fly, Jim enlisted in the US Air Force and flew the F-86-F, then the world’s best operational fighter aircraft. He served in combat at the end of the Korean War as well as the Formosan Crisis. His flying with the service ended with his resignation from the Air Force. His other love, writing, accompanied Jim’s many incarnations; living on a boat in Sausalito, starting the No Name Bar, becoming a real estate developer, and raising his family in the Hawaiian Islands. Jim ultimately returned to Carmel to continue his writing among the white sands and cypress trees. He reconnected with dear friends and married his high school sweetheart. Jim had just finished this book length collection of flying stories when a final illness overtook him. This book is his wish fulfilled.
